Healthy, Wealthy, But Wise?

San Francisco/Sonoma Valley

San Fran. A weird and wonderful city of many faces. I couldn't really appreciate all the city had to offer as I only had 2 days, but I did take a nice walk from Downtown to Marina, passing through Chinatown, the Italian district of North Beach, to the tourist schlock of Fishermen's Wharf and the glitzy Marina. Oh, and I saw the Golden Gate Bridge in fantastic winter sunshine (20C, couldn't complain) with the masses.

The Sonoma Valley is an important wine growing region in California, and I saw it in the company of my friend Astrid and her friends, Patrick, Shadi, and Brian. Brian had some family who were just starting up their own vineyard, and it looked like a lot of work. He seemed to have a lot of family there as we also met his cute Nana, who was so nice that we had to leave a whole box of cookies (which she probably wouldn't eat) just for her. Finally, there was the obligatory free wine tasting at a nearby vineyard. The wine tasted fine to me, but then again what do I know about wines?

Silicon Valley

Ah, the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area. The land of freeways, shopping malls, neat (and pricey) real estate, and more freeways... I stayed with the Usongs, long time friends of the family and had a little experience of life in San Jose, a city in the heart of Silicon Valley - frantically busy, ridiculously high pay, 6 days per working week, and no cooking!

Palo Alto is the land of Stanford University, a very prestigous institution, and a city in itself. Here was where my friend Astrid lives and where my friend from Camp ABC, Alexis, currently studies. Stanford life is typically Californian, so it's no surprise that it's considered 'cool' to be seen cycling through campus with a Jamba Juice in hand (a tall cup of freshly blended fruits, vitamins, minerals, and NO FAT!).

Alexis is an RA (Resident Assistant) and an AA (Academic Advisor), meaning that she supervises a dorm of freshmen (first year students), in her case, freshmen boys! Just spending a few short hours with her gave me an idea of what life is like for the average college student. It was er, interesting to see the constant stream of people coming to her room and listening to the conversations that form. I realise why I was never an 18 year old American male! Oh, and the food is okay (contrary to what everyone says) and of course it's all-you-can-eat. The best thing is the ethernet connection to each dorm room, meaning that everyone gets free and fast Internet connection (isn't it lovely to live in Silicon Valley).

Healthy, Wealthy, But Wise?

To say that Californians are concerned about their health is just understating things a little. Californians are obsessed with their health - vitamin-boosted, non-fat, soya-based, organically-grown crazy. You certainly don't get the impression they're too concerned when you see Wendy's, Denny's, Burger King, McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell (and many more) all lined up next to each other. Then again, anyone who eats all that so-called 'healthy' stuff and spends 20 hours at the gym a week must be just a little concerned.
