News 2000

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted up any news about myself. Most of you probably know that I've well and truly returned to the 'real world'. I arrived home in Australia in February 2000 and I was glad to be back. I didn't even mind the 30C temperatures after experiencing near freezing temperatures only a few days before. One thing I learned from travelling is that I came to appreciate my home a lot more. It was great to see old friends again and catch up with them. I also had fun corresponding with those I met on my travels.

After settling back into life at home (with my parents once again) my next step was to get a job. It wasn't as easy as it seemed, even with a computer science degree, but eventually I got a position as an analyst/programmer at Citibank. Basically I produce and analyse financial data - very different from anything I've ever done before and a big learning experience.

Over the following months I 'rediscovered' my home town on my drives with my new car and weekends away. Here is a little collection of photos from these excursions.

North Coast Holiday

January 2001.

It was a hot, hot January! I was so glad to take two weeks away from work for a period of rest and relaxation. On the first week, my friend Melanie and I escaped the Sydney rat race to the tiny, green oasis of Bellingen, a town some 500km north of Sydney. It was a perfect place for it, set on the banks of the quiet Bellinger River, surrounded by emerald pastures and rainforest-covered hills. It was also perfect timing as the town was flooded just 2 weeks after we left!

The area surrounding Bellingen was so different to that if Sydney. It was definitely sub-tropical, and in the tradition of the North Coast, the town also had its share of new-agers and various eccentrics which gave it its character. The most famous of these was by far Mr. David Helfgott, the inspiration of the Australian film, 'Shine'. By all accounts he is a very sweet man - he even waved at us as we drove by!

The natural aspects of the area also fascinated us. We canoed for 2 hours along the Bellinger and didn't see another boat there, but plenty of birds, a few flying fish, and cows having a paddle. In the evenings the skies of Bellingen would be filled with thousands of flying foxes (an Aussie form of bat), and I had my first real experience with leeches on a walk in the Dorrigo National Park (not the most beautiful of creatures). Although the beaches were nice and uncrowded, it was the rainforests that were the most attractive. Dorrigo was beautiful with its lush vegetation and waterfalls, but the real find was Never Never Creek with its clear, fresh and cold waters where we swam and played in the mini rapids. This is one place I would return to.

Farmhouse Tales

Easter 2001.

Deep in the Southern Highlands south-west of Sydney is the area's best-kept secret - Marist Farmhouse! What is it? Better let the people in the know explain it. It's the place I go to every few months to get away from the rat race, to slow down and breathe a little more deeply. The community there always make me feel welcome and I feel really spoilt with Kostka's good food and homey setup. The Easter celebrations there are quite spectacular, especially with so many young adults around. All in all, it really reminds me of Taize - without the crowds.

Gerroa Dreaming

May 2001.

On a clear weekend I spent a quiet day-and-a-half at Gerroa with the good people of JCA (Josephite Community Aid), whom I spent 5 months living in community with in 1999. Gerroa is about 1 1/2 hours drive south of Sydney and a magnificent place, centred on Seven Mile Beach. These pictures show why I love being in this part of the world.

Coogee Sunrise

June 2001.

A week or so after going to Gerroa, I had another trip "away" - to an off-site conference for work at the Crowne Inn, Coogee. This gave me a rare opportunity to capture Coogee at sunrise.

For those non-Sydneysiders, Coogee is one of Sydney's favourite beaches - apart from Bondi and Manly. Personally I think that Coogee is much nicer than either of those beaches - it has much more character!

Port Stephens Weekend

October 2001.

I returned to One Mile Beach and Port Stephens for a weekend with my friend Irene. This time it was a lot more quieter and although the water was extremely cold it made for a picturesque dip!

Kincumber Retreat

November 2001.

I have been to Kincumber many, many times for many retreats, but this one was more special than most because it was possibly the last retreat given by YCA (Young Catholic Adults) group. The content was extremely challenging and gav me a lot to think about but it was also fun-filled, complete with games of bocci and 500!
