This is the second album from the Oxford band.
First Impressions
I actually bought this album after OK Computer. On my first listen,
I thought that it was less experimental than OK, but that wasn't
necessarily a bad thing. It's as good, in some ways maybe even better.
I love the lush sounds Radiohead have managed to create. There's an interesting
melody or chord progression at every corner, and Thom Yorke's soaring
vocals are there to hold it all together. Not meaning to be corny, it's
a truly beautiful album. It shows that something other than dirty guitars
can happen in '90's rock.
Fav Moment
Too many to mention here! So many that my favourite song changes constantly.
I love the contrasting styles Radiohead uses. They can play grunge-angst
pretty well (witness My Iron Lung and Just) and they are
experts at ballads with a twist (Fake Plastic Trees). My current
favourite is (Nice Dream), a song with simple but effective chord
progression, a lush string accompaniment that enhances but doesn't overpower
the song, and of course Thom Yorke's dreamy vocals. Nice dream, indeed.
Rating
5 out of 5. An absolutely brilliant album from an absolutely brilliant
band. |
